On Winter Solstice on 21 December, the sun will rise at 7:41 and set at 16:19. The day will only be 8 hours and 38 minutes long. On this day five years ago, France thought of the shortest film format and founded the International Short Film Day. The number of countries participating in the event is increasing steeply: this year more than fifty countries will take part in it worldwide. Slovenia joined the event in 2014. At the initiative of the Slovenian Film Centre, on 21 December the selected cinemas will be showing short films for the third time in a row.

Slovenian Cinematheque, where the central event will take place, will screen films in the following categories: classics, animated films for adults, a selection from the the 19th Festival of Slovenian Film, student films of the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television and the Academy of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica, a selection of the Postaja DIVA archive (Centre for Contemporary Arts, Ljubljana), and a selection from the Ljubljana Short Film Festival.

Take a look at the programme and find the answer on 21 December.

The Italian Short Film Center is happy to announce the first Torino Short Film Market. Organised with the collaboration of the Torino Film Festival and the support of the Film Commission Torino Piemonte, it will take place on the first weekend of the Torino Film Festival on the 18th, 19th and 20th of November 2016 in Turin.

During three days, the Torino Short Film Market accredited will have the possibility to access to the Short Film Video Library curated by Enrico Vannucci and Massimo Nardulli, and will have the opportunity to participate to several workshops and meetings. The program will be available soon.

In this occasion, the Italian Short Film Center is launching two international calls:

OLTRECORTO – a call for feature film, TV series, digital and gaming projects that are a development of an already produced short film. The short films and projects will be presented during a pitch to an audience of producers and broadcasters who are searching for talent with the aim of creating a bridge between the world of short films and that of production. The call is open to directors and writers of any age and country who have produced a short film and would like to have it evolve into a feature film, TV series, digital or even a game. The selected project will be represented during the pitch by the director or screenwriter who must be the same individual for both the short film and the project. The Torino Short Film Market will take care of the travel expenses and hospitality (two nights) for one representative of every single project.

DISTRIBUTORS – a presentation of catalogs of short films from distributors to potential international TV buyers in the form of pitches. The call is open to distributors of any country who have a catalog – national or international – of short films of up to 30 minutes in length to be presented to potential TV and web buyers. Each distributor will have 10 minutes of time to present their catalog. The Torino Short Film Market will take care of the hospitality (two nights) for one representative of each distribution company. Reimbursement of travel expenses for distributors is not expected.

The deadline for the delivery of the works and projects is September 30, 2016.

It’s a journey through Europe in nine short films, a journey through which balance and harmony take the place of disorder, injustice and solitude. The friendship between a bear and a little bird, the care of an old lady for her dog, and the motherly love of a hare for her leveret, will bring back the serenity in a world of mischievous blackbirds and warlike oranges.

The Visegrad Animation Forum (May 3-5 2016, Třeboň) has grown into a platform where producers can build networks among themselves and with CEE region broadcasters, present new talents and their creative work for EU producers and help find financing and distribution for their projects. In addition to the main pitching competition for short films and TV series, the three-day programme offers a number of presentations, debates and screenings. Animation professionals at the forum can acquire skills and know-how from foreign experts from the field as well as useful contacts that will contribute to making their animated project a success. Main topics will include choosing the right market and a potential coproduction partner, distributing childrens short films, a case study of successful animated projects, presenting prestigious European studios (Silver Fox Animation and Camera-etc.) and many more.

The shortest day of the year is a very special day for the short film. On December 21st, people in many different countries around the world celebrate the “short format”. The German edition is called the SHORT FILM DAY and took place for the fourth time this year. Anyone could participate in this special occasion and create their own short film event – whether it is in a cinema or in more unusual locations like football stadiums, back courtyards, living rooms, phone booths or even in refugee accommodations. 229 events were organized in 112 cities all over Germany.

The German Short Film Association, which organizes the German edition of the spectacle, has awarded the best ideas with the creative prize “The Lucky 8”. The prize was given to eight organizers for their unusual locations, exceptional film programmes or the fancy framework programme.
During the last years the SHORT FILM DAY could win lots of friends and fans, among them actors, filmmakers and film-enthusiasts. Some of them have become ambassadors, e.g. the filmmakers Axel Ranisch and Rosa von Praunheim, the actor Ludwig Trepte and the critic Knut Elstermann. In videos they tell about their personal relationship to the short film and the shortest day of the year. Again, the German State Minister for Culture and the Media, Monika Grütters, has taken the patronage for the SHORT FILM DAY. This year, young people were in focus for the first time. The young initiative “We’ll Show You” gave 12 to 19-year-olds the opportunity to organize their own film event for the Short Film Day. Young talents could independently develop their own ideas, select the films, invite guests and carry out the event. In the end, eight “young events” took place.

The Swedish Film Institute organized the second edition of Short Film Day in Sweden (“Kortfilmsdagen”), doubling the number of participating venues from the previous year. In 2015 there were screenings in cinemas, libraries, art galleries, churches, shopping malls and schools in 23 cities all over the country.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label= »Text » background_layout= »light » text_orientation= »left » use_border_color= »off » border_color= »#ffffff » border_style= »solid »]

There also were screenings at two places in the metro in Stockholm. Around half of the events took place in cinemas, and the other half in other venues. The biggest tv channel had a short film program on prime time. Between December 1st and 21st we invited one guest each day to select her or his favorite short film and these were published on our website. We also had really good media coverage, both in major national tv and radio, and in local press.
